| Not one, not two, but three majors for Hoffman When Isaiah Hoffman came to the University of Wisconsin-Madison from his home state of Pennsylvania, he basically had no interest in returning to his family’s farm to pursue a career as a dairy farmer. But it didn’t take him long to change his mind. White a leader in lab, on research farm From the time that the discussions began about creating a collaborative dairy research program between UW–Madison, UW–Platteville and UW–River Falls, Heather White could see the benefits of the three schools working together to focus on Wisconsin’s most important agricultural industry. | Laporta a ‘rising star’ in department Jimena Laporta first came to Madison in 2010 as part of a study abroad program while she was a master student in her home country of Uruguay. She came back again six months later to work on a Ph.D. in lactation biology, and in 2020, she came to stay when she was recruited into the UW–Madison’s Animal and Dairy Sciences Department as part of the Target of Opportunity Program, a program aimed at helping departments diversify their faculty. Dairy Innovation Hub funds spur Dairy Cattle Center facelift When the UW–Madison Dairy Cattle Center (DCC) was renovated in 2013, project organizers had envisioned including a welcoming space that would offer educational programming and be visually appealing. But as the $3 million project was being completed, it was decided that renovating the cattle and educational spaces would receive top priority, and when the funds ran out, the lobby renovation got put on the back burner. | Video game teaches proper cow-handling skills There’s more than one way to improve cow-handling skills on the dairy farm, a UW-Madison animal welfare researcher has found. Jennifer Van Os, an assistant professor and Extension specialist in animal welfare in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Animal and Dairy Sciences Department, has developed a serious video game that she believes could transform training in farm animal handling. | Golf outing supports student learning opportunities It has been nearly 66 years since retired dairy farmer Joe Rowbotham graduated with a degree in dairy science from UW–Madison, and the Walworth County man is still appreciative of the education he received during his time there. He was a member of the dairy judging team in 1957 and has fond memories of his time at the UW. Rowbotham and his two sons, Rob and David, both who received degrees from the Dairy Sciences Department, will be playing in the Animal and Dairy Sciences Classic Golf Outing on May 14 at University Ridge Golf Course.
