Continuing the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences “Student Spotlights”, we will be highlighting one of our rising sophomore Dairy Science students!
This week we will get to know more about Garrett Ulness. In this Q&A, Garrett, a rising sophomore Dairy Science student from Valders, Wisconsin, reflects on his experiences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and how they have helped him build a solid foundation of knowledge for his future career. An avid Badger fan and passionate about agriculture, Garrett knew UW–Madison was the perfect school for him. Garrett’s advice for students is to prioritize balance in their lives, dedicating time to both academics and personal relationships and interests. Whether you’re a prospective student or simply curious about campus life, Garrett’s dedication to his academics and extracurricular pursuits, enthusiasm for his future in the dairy industry, and love of all things Wisconsin Badgers demonstrates how deeply he values his college experience and embodies the spirit of the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Why did you choose to attend UW–Madison?
UW-Madison was a very easy choice for me, and after one year here, I’m glad about the decision I made. There were many reasons I chose to become a Badger. Ever since I was younger, with my parents being UW alumni, I enjoyed watching Badger sports with my family. Once I got a little older and came down for the Badger Dairy Invitational Sales and Badger Dairy Camps, I was hooked on the agriculture campus. With world-class dairy and animal science programs, great people, and many alumni connections that help guide us into our future career paths, choosing UW-Madison was a very easy decision.
What clubs/organizations/activities are you involved with?
Alpha Gamma Rho, Badger Dairy Club, UW-Madison Collegiate Dairy Judging team, Badger Crops Club, and Collegiate Farm Bureau
What is your favorite class that you have taken in the department and why?
So far, my favorite class has been Animal Science 102. It is the introductory animal science lab that has a lot of hands-on learning with many different types of animals. I enjoyed the dairy anatomy labs the most but for me being most familiar with dairy cattle it was interesting to learn more about other species of animals. As I further my education I look forward to more dairy specific classes.
What are your future career plans?
I plan on working in the dairy industry with plans on coming back and taking over my family’s 80 cow registered Holstein Farm, Ragnar Holsteins.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
My advice to incoming freshmen is that there are many ways to balance your college life, beyond just focusing on getting your degree. It is equally important to meet people and network with alumni and peers. Maintaining a good balance between academics and social activities is crucial for connecting with others who share similar ideas and interests, which can help you become a better student and person. Also, while UW-Madison is a large campus, once you settle in, make connections, and establish a group of friends, it won’t feel so overwhelming.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
Camp Randall. Game day atmosphere is hard to match anywhere else. Cheering on our favorite team with alumni and friends all while making lifelong memories.
What is your favorite Babcock ice cream flavor?
Cookies & Cream.
