UW-Madison’s hands-on learning is helping prepare Adam Schaik to be a large animal veterinarian

Continuing the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences “Student Spotlights”, we will be highlighting one of our rising sophomore Animal and Veterinary Biosciences students!

This week we will get to know more about Adam Schaik. In this Q&A, Adam, a rising sophomore Animal & Veterinary Biosciences student from Hinsdale, Illinois, reflects on his experiences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and how it has helped him on his path to becoming a veterinarian. Adam’s advice is to encourage students to keep an open mind and take opportunities to learn and try new things. Whether you’re a prospective student or simply curious about campus life, Adam’s dedication to his studies and extracurriculars, eagerness to learn, and love for UW–Madison’s campus offers a glimpse into how there are endless opportunities for enjoyment and involvement awaiting at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Why did you choose to attend UWMadison?

I chose to attend UW-Madison because my friend’s dad went there, and he always told me how amazing of a school it is. UW-Madison has lived up to the expectations I had.

What clubs/organizations/activities are you involved with?

I am currently involved in a research lab, and I volunteer at the sheep unit. I also have an internship this summer working with beef cattle, sheep, and swine here at Madison.

What is your favorite class that you have taken in the department and why?

My favorite class that I have taken is Animal Science 102. It was my favorite class because you were able to get hands on experience with the animals. My favorite lab in the whole section was being able to do a physical examination on a cow. It was amazing to have the opportunity that many people don’t have.

Do you participate in research?

I am an Undergraduate Research assistant in the Wiltbank Laboratory. I am currently working on a project that looks at the correlation between cortisol and postpartum diseases as well pregnancy rates. I am able to go to the farms to help take samples, run the samples in the lab, and analyze the data.

What are your future career plans?

My future career plans is to go to vet school in Madison and become a large animal veterinarian.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

My advice for incoming students who want to partake in veterinary science is to go outside of your comfort zone and explore as many options as you can. You might have an idea of what you would want to do in your future, but it is important to keep an open mind and explore all realms of veterinary science.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is Memorial Union Terrace.

What is your favorite Babcock ice cream flavor?

My favorite Babcock ice cream flavor is Grasshopper.
