Continuing the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences “Student Spotlights”, we will be highlighting one of our rising junior Animal and Veterinary Biosciences students!
This week we will get to know more about Tyler Diels. In this Q&A, Tyler, a rising junior Animal & Veterinary Biosciences student from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, reflects on his experiences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and how it has helped him on his path to becoming a veterinarian. Tyler’s advice for students focuses on staying true to yourself and making sure to work towards your goals. Whether you’re a prospective student or simply curious about campus life, Tyler’s determination in his studies, appreciation for UW–Madison’s picturesque campus, and love for learning about animals shows that if you enjoy what and where you are studying, then you’ll find that enthusiasm translates into a more enriching and fulfilling educational experience at UW–Madison.
Why did you choose to attend UW–Madison?
I chose to attend UW-Madison because I knew it would provide countless opportunities with a high level education. Madison is a beautiful campus town and a perfect place to enjoy mother nature while studying the subjects I enjoy.
What clubs/organizations/activities are you involved with?
I am on the executive board of Pre Veterinary Association, a member of UW Track Club, enjoy running, biking, and anything outdoors. I also love everything animals, especially when it comes to my dog named Luna.
What is your favorite class that you have taken in the department and why?
My favorite animal science class has been The Biology and Appreciation of Companion Animals. This was one of my first classes I took here at UW Madison and it helped me realize my true fascination for animals, especially companion animals. I have always had a love for our furry friends, but this class really helped me realize my passion for learning more about animals and taking care of them.
What are your future career plans?
My educational goal is to get accepted to vet school with intentions of becoming a small animal veterinarian with my very own clinic.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
My advice is to incoming students is to work hard toward your own goals and try not to worry about what other people think. I believe comparison is detrimental to individual success and paving your own path is the best way to achieve anything you dream of.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is Observatory Hill, especially at sunset.
What is your favorite Babcock ice cream flavor?
My favorite Babcock ice cream flavor is Mnookie Dough.
