The UW–Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) Agricultural Research Stations (ARS) program has honored Tom Crenshaw, professor in the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences, with its Recognition Award for Research. The award was presented during the ARS Recognition Awards Reception held Jan. 14, 2026 at Memorial Union in Madison.
Crenshaw is widely recognized for contributions to swine nutrition, with expertise spanning animal nutrition and management as well as bone growth and minerals. His work brings together multiple disciplines to address practical, real-world questions in animal agriculture.
In addition to his research program, Crenshaw has had a long-standing impact on the college’s research infrastructure and the Arlington Agricultural Research Station. ARS recognized his role in helping guide major facility development for swine research and teaching at Arlington, along with sustained leadership in program support through committee service, including chairing the ARS Feed Mill Committee since its inception.
In a message to ARS leadership following the recognition, Crenshaw emphasized the importance of the ARS network and the people who make the research possible:
“The Experiment Station has been a huge support to my research career, and that of my colleagues.”
“The UW ARS staff have a positive attitude to support the researchers and deliver creditable research. And this attitude makes a strong team.”
“I am proud to have had the opportunity to work with ARS over the years.”
“Additionally, ARS provides an immeasurable support for instruction to our undergraduate instructional efforts.”
“The UW ARS is a valuable resource and a foundation for our research, teaching and outreach mission.”
The ARS network serves as a statewide set of “outdoor laboratories, classrooms, and education centers,” supporting hands-on research and learning. The Arlington Agricultural Research Station is the largest site in the system and hosts a wide range of crop and livestock research activities.
