Following a Family Legacy: Emma Dorshorst’s path to Vet School

Continuing the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences “Student Spotlights”, we will be highlighting one of our rising senior Dairy Science students!

This week we will get to know more about Emma Dorshorst. In this Q&A, Emma, a rising senior Dairy Science student from Marshfield, Wisconsin, reflects on her experiences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and how it has helped her create lifelong friendships and learn valuable skills for the future. Emma’s advice for students emphasizes the importance of finding that “perfect” balance of school and social life as a student. While Emma has a busy schedule preparing for vet school, she still remains an exemplary student while participating in campus clubs and taking time to enjoy UW–Madison’s unique culture. Whether you’re a prospective student or simply curious about campus life, Emma’s diligence in school, student involvement on campus, and love for UW–Madison’s campus spirit shows how if you put forth the time and effort into both your education and personal life, you will find yourself not only prepared for the future but appreciative of your time spent while on campus.

Why did you choose to attend UWMadison?

UW-Madison is my ideal school because it provides me with the opportunity to follow in my dad’s footsteps as a Badger and veterinarian. Continuing my education in agriculture will allow me to broaden my knowledge of dairy science beyond my family farm. Between the campus spirit, focus on educational success, and incredible Dairy Science department, UW-Madison has prepared me for my future in Veterinary Medicine.

What clubs/organizations/activities are you involved with?

I am involved in the Association of Women in Agriculture, Badger Dairy Club, and the Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Team.

What is your favorite class that you have taken in the department and why?

My favorite class that I have taken was Dairy Herd Management. I enjoyed learning about the precision associated with managing dairy herds. Dairy herd management opened my eyes to understanding industry benchmark standards and all sides of managing a farm.

What are your future career plans?

My future career plans are to attend Veterinary School after graduation.

My advice for incoming freshman is to understand the importance of achieving good grades, but also how important it is to have a good school and social balance. When reminiscing about college, you won’t remember the exams or assignments, you will instead remember the fun times you enjoyed with your friends and peers.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is Memorial Union. I have had the most productive study sessions there.

What is your favorite Babcock ice cream flavor?

Blueberry Swirl
