High-Impact Undergraduate Activities (HIUA) Awards

The Department of Animal & Dairy Sciences will be accepting applications for HIUA Awards to support undergraduate students’ engagement in research, extension, recruitment, or other scholarly activities. Applications will open February 27; awards will be announced in April.

    Introductory Awards

Introductory HIUA Awards support students who are beginning their involvement in research or other scholarly activities. Award recipients are paired with a faculty or non-faculty/staff mentor and participate in a mentored activity while enrolling in AS/DS 299 (2 credits; approx. 6 hours per week). Students may apply at any academic level; no prior research or lab experience is required. Each award provides $2,000 per student, distributed as $1,000 in Fall and $1,000 in Spring, contingent upon mentor and program approval. Renewal is subject to satisfactory progress.

    · Application period: February 27 – March 27

    · Applications are submitted via Qualtrics, where students indicate their interests, discipline, after seeing available projects.

    · Final mentor–student matches are coordinated by the HIUA Committee

    Advanced Awards

Advanced HIUA Awards support undergraduates who are ready to engage in more independent, research-focused scholarly work under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students submit and pursue student–mentor-approved projects while enrolling in AS/DS 699 and committing approximately 10–12 hours per week. Each award provides up to $6,000 per student, including $5,000 in student stipend ($2,500 in Fall and $2,500 in Spring, contingent upon mentor and student agreement to continue) and $1,000 for materials and supplies ($500 per semester). Advanced HIUA Awards are open to students at any academic level but require prior lab or research experience and a faculty mentor secured prior to application. Following the award period, students are expected to complete at least one scholarly or outreach activity, selected by the mentor based on the nature of the project. Examples include presenting at a seminar or conference, contributing to a peer-reviewed manuscript, assisting with an extension article, or helping organize an outreach or educational event.

    · Application period: February 27 – March 27

    · Submitted via Qualtrics and must include:
