BACKGROUND

The campus Dairy Cattle Center is used for both teaching and research, and is located just one block away from the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences. The Dairy Cattle Center houses 84 milking cows in a tie-stall barn. There is a classroom attached to the facility, which allows students to have hands on access to cows during all lab practical sessions.

The facility also employs students, providing them with a convenient opportunity to gain practical experience and earn some income while attending classes.

UW–Madison is unique in having a working dairy farm on campus – and in a downtown capitol city! Visitors are welcome and encouraged.

VISIT THE DAIRY CATTLE CENTER

The Dairy Cattle Center is open to the public, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, during office hours.  It is recommended that all barn tours be pre-arranged; however, if time permits, walk-in tours can be accommodated. Weekend tours can be accommodated by appointment only.

The Dairy Cattle Center features a new educational lobby space (photos below!) that is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Walk-ins are welcome, but for large groups, appointments work best.

To schedule a tour of the Dairy Cattle Center, please call or email Melanie Eck, Dairy Cattle Center research program manager, at (608) 301-7291 or mseck2@wisc.edu
