Olivia Uttech’s Hands-On Dairy Science Journey at UW-Madison

The Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences takes great pride in recognizing the outstanding students in our program, and we are excited to showcase some of our amazing freshmen. Throughout the rest of the school year, we will feature these remarkable individuals through our “Student Spotlights” articles and social media posts.

To wrap up our student spotlight series, we’re excited to feature Olivia Uttech, a freshman majoring in Dairy Science from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Olivia was drawn to the university’s hands-on learning and welcoming community, immersing herself in Badger Dairy Club, Association of Women in Agriculture, and Collegiate Farm Bureau. She enjoys classes that provide real-world experience with animals, fueling her dream of becoming a Large Animal Veterinarian. Outside of academics, Olivia loves attending sports games, studying in the Animal Science Library, and indulging in Babcock’s M’nookie Dough ice cream. A country music fan, she’s excited to see Morgan Wallen perform at Camp Randall this summer!

Why did you choose to attend UWMadison?

I chose UW- Madison because of the opportunity and community that the University has to offer. I get to work with animals, including dairy cattle, on campus! The animals and other hands-on learning opportunities is what made UW- Madison stand out in terms of academics; however, the community arguably drew me in more. Through tours and other visiting opportunities, I was able to interact with students and faculty who knew my name, made me feel welcome, and ultimately like I belong at UW- Madison!

What clubs/organizations/activities are you involved with or plan to be involved with?

On campus, I am an active member of Badger Dairy Club, The Association of Women in Agriculture, and Collegiate Farm Bureau!

Do you have an exciting class that you are taking/have taken and why?

If I had to choose, the classes that I have enjoyed taking the most so far are the Labs that allow me to work with animals in person. Specifically, Animal Science/Dairy Science 102 my first semester, and Dairy Science 205 this semester. Both of these classes allowed me to gain real hands-on experience working with and learning about animals. I look forward to going to classes like these, now and in my future years!

What are you looking forward to most about being a student at UW-Madison/the city of Madison/or college in general?

I am looking forward to meeting so many great people on this huge campus, learning lots, attending sports games —specifically football and hockey, but ultimately making the most of my time here because I know it will go fast!

What are your future career plans?

My current career goal is to become a Large Animal Veterinarian!

What is your favorite spot on campus?

My favorite study spot on campus is probably the Animal Science Library! This may be because I just wound up spending a lot of time there, but also because it is so homey and comforting! It is a nice spot for me to sit down and get things done!

What is your favorite Babcock ice cream flavor?

My favorite Babcock ice cream flavor would have to be M’nookie Dough!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

A fun fact about me is that I love going to country music concerts! I am excited to see Morgan Wallen here at Camp Randall!
