
The Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences takes great pride in recognizing the outstanding students in our program, and we are excited to showcase some of our amazing freshmen. Throughout the rest of the school year, we will feature these remarkable individuals through our “Student Spotlights” articles and social media posts.
This week we’re pleased to spotlight Summer Hammann, a freshman majoring in Dairy Science from Barron, Wisconsin. Captivated by UW-Madison’s renowned dairy science program and its strong sense of community, Summer has immersed herself in organizations like the Association of Women in Agriculture and Badger Dairy Club. Her coursework, such as Dairy Science 205, allows her to deepen her understanding of genetics, appraisal, and dairy judging, building on her prior experience. With aspirations of becoming a herdsman on a dairy farm, Summer is using her time at UW-Madison to develop leadership skills, foster lasting friendships, and enjoy everything the campus and city have to offer.

Why did you choose to attend UW–Madison?
I chose to attend UW-Madison for their exceptional dairy science program, networking, and I loved the layout of campus.
What clubs/organizations/activities are you involved with or plan to be involved with?
I am involved with the Association of Woman in Agriculture, Badger Dairy Club, Collegiate Farm Bureau, Cheese Club, and plan to be part of the dairy judging team
Do you have an exciting class that you are taking/have taken and why?
Right now, I am in Dairy Science 205, which looks over linear type appraisal, mating programs, dairy judging, and national genetic improvement programs. I really like this class because it is building my prior knowledge of dairy judging and genetic programs.
What are you looking forward to most about being a student at UW-Madison/the city of Madison/or college in general?
As a student at UW- Madison I am looking forward to taking on leadership positions in clubs, learning, and building lifelong friendships.

What are your future career plans?
My future career plans are to work as a herdsman on a dairy farm.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is Memorial Union because of the view you get of Lake Mendota and it’s very peaceful.
What is your favorite Babcock ice cream flavor?
Union Utopia
